Autism Awareness Month Celebrations: Jinja Outreach

Autism Awareness Uganda headed to Jinja for our main outreach event for the 2023 Autism Awareness Month celebrations.

Accompanied by some members of Uganda Human Rights Commission, our behavioural and occupational therapists saw over 100 children, who came from Mukono, Njeru, Bugembe, Kamuli, Jinja and Kampala. In addition, we offered legal and counselling for free, which relieved parents of the expensive costs of these services.

We also created partnerships with several parents and teams so that communities can continue to get support.

For us as AAU, it was confirmation that there’s still so much work today, especially beyond Kampala. We need to get out of Kampala more to help spread awareness about autism and special needs as well as provide some of the necessary interventions that families need to help improve their own lives and the lives of the people they care for who have autism and other special needs.
